This is a medicine not too many people work with these days despite a long historical usage - perhaps the longest historical usage of any entheogen! Found on every continent of the planet besides Antartica, many claim this fungi to be the root behind many religious myths and cultural myths the world over. Some say this is the holy grail or even Jesus himself. Many see this as the root of the Santa Claus story. It is also claimed to be at the root of other religions: Hinduism via the Rig Veda, Zorastrianism, all 3 Abrahamic faiths, Greek mythology, Mythraism ect.... When I first heard of this mushroom I was unsure whether it was really safe to ingest, and I heard horror stories of stomach cramps and vomiting that didn't sound so interesting to me.... But years later someone told me about smoking the caps of this mushroom and how it was a gentler experience which induced lucid dreaming and had none of the body load associated with eating the mushrooms. I was intrigued. And in a likely synchronicity, 3 days later I found the first wild Amanita I had ever seen in my life! I of course had no choice but to pick it and smoke it! And I was in for a surprise! Things started off very gentle with smoking this mushroom, but as I kept smoking the experience built up and I had one of the most eye-opening experiences of my life. Incredibly personal and liberating realizations - true medicine work. I had just spent 2 months in Peru and this experience was just as deep if not deeper then anything I had experienced with the shamans their - and I was just at home with a mushroom I found growing in downtown Seattle! I was lucky enough to find a few patches of Amanitas that year and the following year as well. Since I had good experiences with smoking I just stuck to that. Had many gentle journeys and just a few really deep ones - but when this mushroom takes you deep it takes you all the way! Well I have been doing some research lately and looking into other ways to work with this mushroom. I wanted to share some of the valuable resources I have found with others - maybe you will feel called to work with this medicine as well. www.ambrosiasociety.org/www.ambrosiasociety.org/files/herbofimmortality2.pdfwww.somashamans.com/Between these sources I think you should find any information you need to safely work with this mushroom. A lot of the info is free and there are also some books and a DVD available for those wanting more information. If you have any experiences with this mushroom - please feel free to share! I would love to hear more personal accounts! I'd also love to hear about how people like the books from Soma Shamans - I plan on getting one at some point but havent yet.... I have been reading "Herb of Immortality" from the Ambrosia website... Pretty useful stuff. I plan on trying the Holy Grail recipe in the book - basically you take a half ounce of Amanita that has been dried and cured at least 3 months, place them in a terra cotta clay pot and add some grape juice then cover and let sit for 2 days. After two days you pour off the juice and the amanita pieces, and before too long the clay will start growing a new fungus and is basically a never ending supply of amanita. Supposed to taste good and age well - maturing over time. Pretty excited to test it out. I'll try to post an update as soon as I get into making the grail and have something worth posting.... Maybe I can share some pictures too

Alright.... Finally started the grail! Super excited about it.... I got a 30oz container and used about 1 ounce of dried and cured yellow Amanitas from Washington state. I am following the directions from the "Herb of Immortality" pdf I linked above (page 60 has the instructions), and I am using grape juice. Later tonight I will strain off the juice which should be my first batch of "ambrosia" (amanita infused juice), and then over the next couple weeks the new fungus should grow in my bowl and become my grail!
I forgot to take pictures before I started, but I will try to remember and take some pics of the rest of the process.... Maybe sometime next week I will even have a chance to try my first batch of ambrosia! I probably wont get to it this week, just because I have a few clients this week for other ceremonies and will be too busy...
Was funny - when I poured in the juice I immediately covered the bowl with a cloth - good thing because all of a sudden a fly flew up and wanted my amanita juice! Guess they dont call it "fly algaric" for nothing!

Yesterday was my first experience drinking the "ambrosia" (infused grape juice) from what will be my grail. So basically juice infused for 8-9 hours with amanita and then watered down (2 parts water to one part juice). Tastes good actually - like grape juice with a hint of amanita (and amanita taste pretty decent). I drank about a third of what my first batch produced - it was about 2 wine glasses worth. I drank the second wine glass about 90min after the first one, because I was testing out dosage strength. The come-on of the effects are a little slow and gentle which I liked.... Felt like a light alcohol buzz at first, but then when I closed my eyes I would see lots of colors, geometries and visuals. I never had any nausea throughout the entire experience. About 90 min in it seemed like it had peeked and I wanted a little deeper experience so I drank the second glass which took another hour or so to fully peak. This amount of amanita was certainly enough for me to know I had consumed amanita and I got a decent feel for the mushroom, but normally I would like a slightly more powerful experience - next time I will probably drink what I have left of the ambrosia in one go to see what a stronger experience is like (I have about 60-70% of the infused juice left). Amanita seems really nice by itself, but I could also see it working well with psilocybin mushrooms added if the moment felt right.... Main experience consisted of very thoughtful meditations and reflections on life, interesting visuals, and at a couple points I also felt like my body was drifting away... I think a higher dose might have caused out of body experience.... I also had a very strange synchronicity when I decided mid-journey to go for a short walk at the park next door: I saw to boys playing together, and they looked like brothers about 2 and 4 years old. The younger one sat on the grass and looked at me and I thought "Wow, he looks just like my brother at that age!" Then the older one called back my brothers name to the little child! At that point I realized the two boys were a look alike match for my brother and I.... And the younger boy called my name to the older brother! Was pretty trippy! lol.... These synchronicity type patterns seem to be a hallmark of the amanita to me, and I am curious to see how they progress with more experience.... Overall I would say this was a nice gentle introduction to Amanita and a very enjoyable experience with some insight and a good deal of relaxation. I think larger doses will be more insightful, and maybe also a little more challenging which I look forward to. I would certainly recommend the grail method so far - seems to produce a light and gentle psychedelic that is tasty and easy to make at home. If you made your own clay bowls and foraged your own mushrooms it could also be potentially free to make and can last you a lifetime (if you bought both the bowl and the mushroom online it would be close to $40-50 which still is cheap for an endless supply of amanita). ....... Now, this was just the first batch of ambrosia that came from my first infusion which is how you start the grail.... I havent gotten to test out yet how the new fungus will infuse my juice. It still needs another 2 weeks I would guess to get to the right spot that I can feed it more grape juice. Here is a pic: You can see why the Holy Grail is not for the faint of heart! Looks pretty gnarly! Smells good though, and the notes I am following say it is supposed to look scary but smell nice, and the colors of the fungus so far match what the notes describe (amanita pieces have turned black and hard and there is a white/grey hairlike fungus growing all over the bowl). The white fungus will be my new grail if everything keeps working out.... I hope it does, as I really want to go deeper with this medicine and so far the grail was really nice to work with.... I will keep posting updates as the grail progresses and especially after I get to try my next infusion with the new fungus from my grail!

Thanks for sharing all this info and links and experience. I've been making fermented raw goat milk ( a factor in killing a tumor), kombucha and milk kefir and apple cider vinegar. I didn't know that "ambrosia" could be cultivated like this. I hope to try this---- must find the starter. I need to consult Nature about all this chaos in the world and Near Term Human Extinction that Guy McPherson is preaching about. He's actually teaching a grief workshop.

Well, my first grail got infected, so I had to toss it out.... Saw some yellow and blue mold spots (most looked good, but those little spots were worrisome). I do have some more amanitas though, so I will probably start my second grail in the next month sometime.... Feeling really called to amanitas lately! I found some others who have tried this method finally - apparently infections are common with the grails. They are not as easy to keep sterile as other methods in the pdf, though they have the simplest instructions and are the easiest thing to make.... I used to make kefir and kombucha too.... This is a bit more adventurous because I cant find others online doing this - just the one pdf. The "starters" will be popping up out of the ground in a couple months - maybe you will get lucky and find some! I also found some decent specimens here: eternityinabox.com/shop/amanita-muscaria-grade-a-washington-state-caps/

Thanks for the update. I've had to toss stuff as well. Hard to do but not worth the risk.

Ya, wouldnt want to get sick, and it is easy to start another one over.... Still very curious to see if this works long-term though! I think the current amanitas I have still need to cure for another month before they are ready for the grail though, unless I order some other ones or get some from a friend first...
Also considering trying a more controlled method of growing the "fleece" - there are some more complicated methods in the pdf which are more sterile and have less chance of infection.... Hoping to eventually try a bunch of the recipes in there...

In connection to the thread titled Ketamine in psychiatry, I found in a scholarly article that ketamine acts on muscarinic receptors. I wonder if this could indicate a similar pharmacology of action or even potential of amanitas in treatment of depression.

I didnt know that - but sounds interesting! I do think amanitas could help in depression - they are a pretty interesting mushroom. I have a feeling they would also excel in physical healings - they have many amazing health properties. The Herb of Life pdf talks about some of them and mentions a few healing stories I think...
The effect of amanita and ketamine are very different, but both are unique in many ways among psychedelics. Very different then the other plants ect you will find out there. I think there may be some similarities between salvia and ketamine actually as well - both are disassociatives.
I think amanita might also have some relationship with datura but I am not sure what yet.... Muscarine and scopalamine are agonists of each other meaning that they cancel each other out (if you get to high on one you could bring yourself down with a little of the second one - but it wont reduce nausea, only the altered state will be reduced). I have also had visions of them together, and twice visited a past life where I apparently worked with both of them as a shaman type healer.... Still unsure what their connection is though because I am still relatively inexperienced with both.
I was gifted a giant amanita yesterday by a good friend though, so I do have that to look forward too!
edit to add: while muscarine and scopalamine are agonists of each other, Amanita Muscaria has very little muscarine in it and has mostly ibutnoic acid and muscimol, so some research is suggesting that they may not cancel each other out.... I have not tested it yet so cannot say. Maybe they work together in some other way, or maybe they still do cancel each other out, but I still feel they have some type of connection together....

I have been trying Don Teeter's method for making holy fleece out of grape juice. Instead of using a terra cotta I use a drinking glass, grape juice and 7 g of powdered amanita. After 3 days there is white fleece with no sign of contaminations, smell is good. The only thing is that after boiling the resulting liquid from an infusion for 30 min, the taste is still very acidic even when diluted 4-5 times. The acidic feeling lingers for hours in the mouth and it seems to be upsetting somehow. Can you please comment on how acidic yours is? If at all? trying to understand... Could it be that I'm getting ibotenic acid but that boiling is not enough to convert it? Thank you

Are you using the grail tech with glass or are you using the Sacred Wine tech? They both work differently and I only have personal experience with the grail tech....
With the grail tech you do not boil the liquid after infusing it - you just dilute it and drink it. Not acidic at all - tastes like a unique grape juice.
If you are using the Sacred Wine tech maybe you could get more info on the Ambrosia Societies forum? (they have a forum on their website)
